May 11. Wow finally made it out. It's been a long winter and the Marina is finally open. Managed to get some Bass fishing in today but the pick was not good, Had some runoffs and some Blues along with SeaRobins and Skates but the Bass were not cooperating.
May 18 Another day of bad weather but tried to sneak out for a little clamming on the bay flats. Another tough day for the Bass. Used all of the clams and even trolled some stretch plugs with poor results. Think I will go right to Fluke fishing next week.
May 27. After two days of bad weather we managed to get out today. The water was cold and dirty which makes fishing tough. However we did manage to find the Fluke and caught lots of shorts and keepers to 19 inches.
June 9. Much better day today. The ocean water was too cold for Fluke but the Blues were busting at the tip of the hook. We moved into the warmer water up the Reach channel and got into a steady pick of Fluke with plenty of shorts and keepers averaging around 19 inches. The blues also raided the channel and were caught on everything you threw at them.
June 15. Ran outside looking for Blues or Bass on top but not much happening. Ran down past the Rocks to Long Branch and found bunker but no fish underneath them. Stayed out on the Rocks and had a nice catch of Fluke with SeaBass and assorted other fish mixed in. Ocean flat calm with sunny skies. Beautiful day on the water.
June 16. Fathers Day trip. Started in the Sandy hook bay and were on Fluke and Croakers right away. Ran out to the reach and had more Fluke but no drift which makes fishing tough. Around the hook and got into them again with a nice drift and not too much traffic. Ended with a nice catch of Fluke to 20 inches. Looks like the summer Fluke season is finally here with lots of hungry Fluke all over.
June 23. Fishing under the super full moon today made for some tough fishing but with some effort we made it a worth while trip. The fish were not biting like they were last week but there is such a large body of Fluke out there that we ended with a good catch anyway. Did not catch as many shorts but there was a much better ratio of shorts to keepers. We ended up with more keepers this week with the largest just shy of 4lbs.
June 29. Had the makings of a really good day today. Forecast sw wind 5-10 sunny with ocean swells 4-6.Down side of the full moon. Wrong! Made the turn at the hook and winds were actually se at 10-15 swells were breaking waves close together. So much for going back to were we were nailing fish last week. Fished inside and moved a lot to try to find a good drift. Finally we got on the spot and were nailing fish on every drift. Problem was they were mostly short fish. But had fun catching fish anyway. One keeper at 18.5 was going to be the only fish for dinner tonight. Lucky he was a fat one.
July 4. Had a really nice day on the ocean today. Lots of fish caught all day. Again the action was with mostly sub-legal size Fluke but mixed in with Sea Bass and assorted other fish. We were busy reeling in fish the entire day.
July 6.Hot out there today. Started in the bay and hit shorts and sea robins. Moved outside and started hitting fish steady. Fluke, Sea Bass, Robins and Doggies. Had action on every drift with a lot of short fluke still accounting for most of the catch. Ended the day with some nice Fluke to 20 inches and a nice 4.5 lb Sea Bass.
July 14. Fished off Sandy Hook ocean on a nice sunny day. Had lots of action all day with lots of shorts and keepers up to 22inches.
July 27. What a great day we had today. Fished outside and in the bay and had steady action in most of the spots we tried. Had a nice mix of keepers and short fluke averaging 17 - 18 inches with the bigger keepers up to 22 inches.
Aug 3. The weather wasn't perfect today but the fishing was very good. Had half a dozen Fluke on the first drift. Caught fish all morning with lots of action and keepers to 20 inches. I will take clouds and rain any time if the fishing is that good. Now is the time for Fluke because there are a lot of fish around .
Aug 10. Tough day today with poor drifting conditions. Had wind against tide all morning. Had to move a lot to find fish. Started in the bay and ended up at the rattlesnake. The moves were worth it because we managed to put together a decent catch of keeper Fluke up to about 24inches.
Aug 17. Nice day on the water today. Fishing conditions were not what we had hoped for with a very fast drift in the ocean. But we picked at Fluke all day with lots of shorts and near keepers. Did manage some keepers up to 3.5lbs though.
Aug 24. Another good day of Fluke fishing in the ocean. Lots of action in Sandy Hook channel until the tide changed. Mostly short fish but also caught keeper seabass which were released because the season is closed.
Sept 1. Fished the Sandy Hook channel in the ocean again and caught a good mix of keeper fluke and shorts. Drift was a little fast but with heavy weight we got to were the fish were hiding. Tide change killed the bite again.
Sept. 7. Good fishing today with lots of action on every drift in Sandy Hook channel. Caught lots of Fluke with all the keepers over 20 inches and fat.
