2003 SEASON
May 4  Well the boat is in the water and I made a test run today. Clammed out on the Keyport flats for slot sized stripers. Looks to be another good Striper season.
May 10 Fly fishing charter in very soupy conditions kept us inshore today. We did manage to land about 30 Blues 3-6 lbs and Striper to 30+ inches. All on fly rods. Nice going guys!
May 11 Happy Mothers Day! Stayed in today to give some special attention to the mother of my 2 boys. I'd be nothing without her!
May 17 & 18  No trips this weekend. Small craft warnings for 40 mph winds.
Memorial Day weekend
May 24 Noreaster trips cancelled
May 25 FlyFishing trip. Cold day out there but we managed to bring in some bass and bluefish on the fly.
May 26 Forecast called for 5-10 knts but woke up to 20knts + I wonder where those weather guys were out last night. Trip cancelled. Tough weekend!  I hope the weather gods give us a break soon!
May 31 Another tough weekend. Small craft warnings again. Got out in the morning but with the bad forecast only fished Romer and the Knoll. Not to much doing, had to work very hard to get fish in the boat. The charter did take bass home though
June 1 gale warning no trips today!
June 7  Rain! Rain! Rain! Trolled out at Flynns and Romer for a good catch of blues. A huge school on Porpose hit the shoals and chased the fish away. That was quite a show.
June 8 Caught more bluefish on the chunk and trolling up the Reach. Had a lot of knockdowns trolling shad rigs.
June 14 Heavy Fog. No trip this morning.
June 15 Finally the Sun! Had a good morning catching Fluke with the boys on fathers day. Many fluke with keepers up to 4-5lbs. Also got some bluefish and some of the biggest searobins I have ever seen. All in all a nice day.
June 21 & 22  Unbelievable! Blown out again!
June 24  Lots of Fluke to 18" and Bluefish on Flynns Knoll today.
June 28 Nice catch of Stripers to 15lbs today on the Knoll. Also lots of sharks and rays.
July 4  Picked away at Fluke avg. 17" on the Knoll. Slow day but managed to put a catch together.
July 6 Picked away again on the Knoll. Wind against tide. We moved out to Sandy hook channel and managed a decent pick of keeper Fluke.
July 7  Worked very hard to pick up about a dozen Fluke today. The drift picked up in the afternoon and fishing improved.
4th of July weekend What a complete and welcome change from Memorial Day weekend. The weather was perfect. Sunny and hot!
Fluke Tournament Jul 12 & 13

July 13 Faired much better today. Caught a lot of Fluke in the Reach channel. Most were well over 17 inches with a couple over 22.5 inches. Largest was 4.5 lbs. and we got a couple of those. Also landed a couple of Bluefish to 8.5lbs.
But another year without Moby. We will get him next year!

July 12 Tough fishing today. Strong SW wind and Moon driven out going tide. Fished the Ambrose channel and landed a lot of 16.5 inchers along with skates and dogfish but no Moby Fluke.
July 19  Waited for the rain to end this morning before leaving the dock at 8am. Fished between Chapel hill and the Knolls. Light wind against tide made for a lot of dog fish. We still managed a pick of Fluke to 21"
July 20  Went on the hunt today for Fluke. Started in the bay and traveled up the beach before hitting solid fish. Caught over 30 fluke with keepers to 3.5 lbs. Also the usually pick of doggies. Good job Capt. Jack!
July 26  Had a very young angler (9yrs old) on for the first time today, so we stayed almost on the beach. Caught a few shorts and then the blues hit. Had a fun day catching blues. I think that young girl will be back out after getting a taste of bluefish on light tackle. Someone is going to have sore arms tomorrow.
July 27 Fished on the lee side of Sandy Hook away from the 20 mph SW wind. Had good drifts fluking all day. Lots of fish on every drift with Fluke up to 20 inches and some of the biggest sea robins I have seen so far this season.
July 30  Had steady action inside the bay today for a good catch of Fluke to 20" and Bluefish to 9lbs. What a perfect day on the water.
August 2 Almost didn't make it out today. The weather forecast was bleak. The charter forgot to turn his phone on, so I waited for them to show up in the morning. After discussing the options they decided to give it a try. The fluking was dead in the bay but the shorts were hitting in the ocean. We did run into a school of big Bluefish near Romer. Ended up keeping about half a dozen Blues up to 9lbs. Turned into a decent day.
August 3  Tried Fluking in the bay again and the fishing was tough. Then the wind picked up and we found out where they were hiding. Ended with a nice catch of keepers and we left them biting.
August  9 & 10  No trips this weekend. Bad weather forecast. Decided to do my mid-season maintenance.  Forecast looks great for next weekend.
August 16 Fished in Sandy hook channel for a decent catch of Fluke to 19". Also many dogs and huge SeaRobins. The bite started slow with wind against tide but picked up considerable once the tide changed.
August 23  Ran down the beach off Monmouth Beach and found many Fluke to 20". It took over 50 Fluke before catching the limit.
August 24  Another outstanding day on the water. Ran back down the beach again. Not as many Fluke but we still hit our limit with the biggest Fluke tiping the scales at 8 lbs.
Aug 30 Started Fluking in Chapel Hill and Sandy hook Channels with limited results. Moved down the beach where we picked up a good catch of Fluke to 3.5lbs. Another good job Capt. Jack!
Sept 5 After a solid week of bad weather we managed to get out today and scrape of a pick of Fluke to 19".
Sept 6 Strong north wind forced us to fish off the NY side near the Verazano bridge in the morning where we caught some Fluke and chased the birds for Bluefish. Later in the morning we moved back into the NJ side where we finished up with a nice catch of Fluke to 20".
Sept 7 With better drifting conditions today, we were able to fish the Reach channel for Fluke to 4lbs.
Sept 13  Gale warnings. No trips today.
Sept 14 Heavy fog today and strong storms. Starting to think about approaching hurricane.
Sept 18 - 19 Hurricane Isabele. Pulled the boat out of harms way with fast approaching hurricane.
Sept 20  Soon as the winds calm down I will be getting back into the water. Hope my marina is still there.
Sept 21 Well I did get the boat back in. What a parking lot at the Marina. We will be running again on Saturday.
Sept 27 Fly Fishing trip in some pretty tough conditions today with wind to 20 - 25. Did manage some Blues and Spanish Mackerel though. Nice job Vin.
Sept 28  Well another bad day with wind rain and lightning in the forecast. Good day to sleep in.
Oct 4  Fished with Capt. Jack aboard today. With the wind pushing 25+ we stayed in close and picked away at Fluke to about 3lbs.
Oct. 11 Well with the wind blowing hard out of the east it seems a good time to end this season and head south for some long rod redfishing.  It's been an interesting season with the Stripers going well into the summer and the Weakfish no where to be found. Ended up with some good Fluking before the hurricane sent them packing.  The Bluefish have been Enormous and the schools of Albies and Spanish Mackerel have been great fun on top. The weather this season has for the most part been windy and wet. But the fishing has been good. I enjoyed having you on the boat and look forward to your return next spring.

I am having a Holiday Special where you can receive a 10% discount off the regular charter fee if you reserve before January 2004. You do not need to commit to a date until April 2004. This makes a great Christmas or Holiday gift.
Have a safe and happy winter
Capt. Karl
