FISHING  LOG
Catch me if you can!
2009 Season
April 5th. The boat is finally in the water and I am looking forward to a good season of fishing.
April 11. Tried to get a Striper trip in today but a strong NE wind and small craft warnings changed that plan.
April 18.  Good day on the bay today. Great weather and the bass were biting. Had lots of action all day on former slot size bass up to 26 inches.
April 19. The fishing was tougher today and the bass were spread out . We got on fish early with some shorts caught but a lot of swinging and missing going on. We missed a couple nice sized fish when the hooks were not set before reeling. But it is early and everyone is a little rusty after a long winter.
April 25. Another great day on the water. Lots of sunshine calm winds and plenty of Stripers. Had steady action all day in the back bay with a ton of shorts and some keepers to about 30 inches. Not monster size but very feisty fish. The water temp finally hit the 55 degree mark

May 2. Fished the ocean side today with mixed results. Had a heavy swell running so I could not get to my intended spot and had to contend with the fleet. We had some good run offs and plenty of Bluefish biteoffs. But the bass were not very aggressive even though I could read them on the fishfinder. We started to troll stretches and then the action started with the big blues. We nailed blues to 7 to 8 lbs and even had one bite a stretch in half. I have not had that happen before. No keeper Bass today and the action came from the big blues.
May 9. Looked like it was going to be a good day when I got down to the dock and the rain had stopped. Well then the fog rolled in and boy was it thick. So we trodded out to the fishing grounds at a wopping 6 knots. Put the lines in and wham, all the rods went off at the same time. And the day continued like that until the tide stopped and then the Blues started slamming every rod. After losing a ton of hooks the tide started running again and the bass were back. Ended the day with the box full and the fish still biting.
May 16. With the heavy fog and crazy boat traffic from the striper tournament, I left the dock much later than normal. We only fished for about 30 minutes before losing the tide. We did have some nice fish up on artificials and broke off some. Then we made the long trip out to the fishing grounds in the fog but by then the fleet had spread the fish out and we could not get on any good marks. Had some run offs and some bluefish but not the kind of day I had hoped for.

May 22. A beautiful night catching Blues on top with light tackle. Hit a school only 5 minutes out of the marina and stayed with them most of the trip. Great action with plenty of double headers.
May 23. The day started out nice with a forecast of SW winds at 5-10 and an outgoing tide. Pretty much perfect conditions. Setup on some marks and landed 2 short Bass and had several runoffs within 30 minutes. Then the wind changed to the NE and started to blow 15 to 25. With the strong tides from the new moon and the NE winds anchoring got ugly fast. Trolled up some big Bluefish before the beating got
too bad for the charter and we called it a day.
May 24. Great day catching Fluke in the bay. Had 50 to 60 Fluke with half of them 1/2 inch shy of a keeper. The keepers we did get were all over 19 to 20 inches. We also had just as many Sea Robins to keep the rods bending all day.
May 25. Another good day catching Fluke in the bay. Left the dock late and got back early but still managed to catch 15 Fluke with 2 keepers to 20".
May 30. Nice day on the bay today. The Fluke were hungry and kept up busy all day with keepers to 19 inches and plenty of shorts.
May 31. Started out a little windy and cold today but warmed up around mid morning. The bite was not as good as it had been but still had plenty of Fluke with keepers to 21 inches.
June 6. Tried to clam some bass today, but they were not interested. Switched to Fluke and had a steady bite of near keepers with very little Sea Robins mixed in. Of course no keeper Fluke were mixed in either except for the one we lost at the side of the boat. The good news is that we caught the first Porgy of the year. A nice 12 incher.
June 7. Went right to the Fluke today and managed a nice pick with the biggest keeper topping 5 lbs. Not as many fish out there today, but the fish were bigger.
June 13. Ran offshore of the Rocks today to hunt for SeaBass. Some rollers out there but mostly a nice day. Ended with a good catch of keeper SeaBass, with plenty of shorts in between and Fluke up to 6lbs.
June 20. Rain,Rain,Rain. A good thing the fish are biting. Had a good pick of shorts and keepers today in between the raindrops. Fluke up to 21 inches.
June 21. Had the boys out for our annual Fathers Day trip today. Weather started out with rain and wind but improved as the day went on. We had a steady bite of keeper and short Fluke. The fish were a little scattered but we finally found a nice pile and landed fish up to 5lbs. Everyone on board went home with enough fish for a couple of nice dinners.
July 3. AM trip Nice day catching Fluke along the ammo pier. Had a boat load of kids fishing today. Plenty of action on shorts and a couple of keepers.
July 3. PM trip. Fluke fishing with kids part two. Had a second group of kids this afternoon with the oldest around 14. Good action with short and keeper Fluke as well as a large skate.
July 5. Todays trip out to the Knoll produced some keeper fluke to 19inches and lots of shorts.
July 12. Tough day today with wind against tide all day and a full moon thrown in for good measure. Hit all the spots in the bay and also ran down the beach. Not to many keepers to be had. And then the dogfish hit. Lots of fish caught but few keepers today.
July 15.Ran offshore a ways today to try find some bigger fish. Turns out it was a good move with Fluke to 6lbs and plenty of keeper size Seabass to sweeten the pot. Great weather and lots of action.
